Political Race in South Florida Dominated by Hispanic Jews
Jewish Daily Forward, Posted: Jul 18, 2008
LOS ANGELES – Both candidates in a congressional race in south Florida are Jewish or have ties to the Jewish faith, reflecting the large population of Jews from Cuba, Mexico and South America. The two candidates for the House of Representatives in Miami-Dade County are the Republican incumbent Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, 56, a Cuban American, whose mother was Jewish and left the faith, and the Democratic challenge Annette Taddeo,41, a Colombian-born business leader, who converted to Judaism while in her twenties. In a district where 50 percent are Hispanic and 6-8 percent Jewish, both candidates are strongly pro Israel. According to a Bendixen poll, Ros-Lehtinen leads the race 58 percent to 31 percent for Taddeo with 11 percent undecided, this in a year when other Republican incumbents are in trouble.
