Chinese Restaurants Lose Business Over Fears of Swine Flu

ALHAMBRA, Calif. -– Chinese restaurants in Southern California are reporting a drop in their number of customers as a result of fears over swine flu, reports the Sing Tao Daily. Quanwei Gong, chairman of the American Chinese Restaurant Association, said Chinese restaurants had already been suffering from the economic crisis. Now, he said, fears of swine flu have caused them to lose another 20 to 30 percent of their business. Gong said that his restaurant, which usually has a line of people out the door, now has empty tables.
According to Gong, some people are avoiding Chinese restaurants because they have many pork dishes, despite the fact the swine flu is transmitted from human to human. According to the CDC, swine flu is not spread by food, and people can't get swine flu from eating pork or pork products. Gong added that by law, all Chinese restaurants use frozen pork that is fully cooked before being served.
