Asian Americans No Longer Silent

WASHINGTON DC – There are 7.4 million Asian American and Pacific Islander voters this year, and the number is expected to grow to 14.8 million in the year 2030, according to a report by Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics (LEAP), an Asian-American organization based in Los Angeles. Paul Ong, professor of Urban Planning at UCLA and co-author of the report, told the World Journal that Asians have always been seen as foreigners and their involvement in politics has been considered limited to monetary contributions. But, he said, 7.4 million Asian Americans make for a powerful voting bloc. Although 61 percent of Asian Americans are foreign-born, they have the highest naturalization rate among all ethnic groups since the 1980s.
