Editor's Note: Odette Keeley, news anchor for "Stories From The Ethnic Media" in NAM's radio program, "New America Now", talks to ethnic media professionals on the biggest headlines in their news outlets and their take on the news of the day. This week: at the debate sponsored by NAM and the San Francisco Foundation, ethnic media heard the arguments for and against Prop 8 from community representatives including Tawal Panyacosit, director of API Equality opposing Proposition 8; and Rev. Derek McCoy, outreach coordinator for ProtectMarriage.com seeking to pass Prop 8.
Proposition 8 seeks to change the California Constitution and eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry.
Erika Cebreros, reporter for El Mensajero, the San Francisco Bay Area's largest Hispanic weekly, says many of their Latino readers are invested in the issue of gay marriage; Sunita Sohrabji, reporter for India West, a national weekly paper for South Asians, says the paper's coverage is giving new perspectives on families to their readers, including new voters; and Ragini Srinivasan, managing editor of India Currents,a monthly magazine serving California's South Asian community; and who was also a media panelist in the debate, explains their editorial position on Prop 8.
