MEXICO CITY –- Despite the threat of about 20 anti-immigrant laws, the number of Latinos in Arizona has increased in recent years by 45.2 percent in what many consider to be the most hostile state to undocumented immigrants in the country. Between 2000 and 2007, Latinos increased to become 30 percent of the state’s population. In Maricopa County, where Phoenix is located, the Hispanic population grew 283.6 percent, or 760,000 individuals, according to the study “The State of Latino Arizona” released by the Arizona Latino Research Enterprise and Arizona State University. The analysis found that in the same period, there was an increase in hate crimes against Latinos, anti-immigrant legislative efforts, and an increase in immigration enforcement.
