Coup Could Jeopardize Top UN Post for Thai

LOS ANGELES -- After a military takeover of the Thai government Tuesday morning, a Thai newspaper editor speculated that this would mean the end of the campaign of Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister for the United Nations' top post. Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirathai was among the top contenders for UN Secretary General. "How can you have a candidate who is a representative of a government that no longer exists," said Thai-language weekly Asian Pacific News Editor Paison Promnui. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations had supported Sathirathai. Thailand's army chief General Sonthi Boonyaratglin took over the reigns of government this week to alleviate, he said, the political stalemate that has paralyzed the country since corruption allegations exploded against Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra earlier this year.
