Republican Senators Say No to Honoring Hispanic Press

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid introduced and passed a resolution last week designating Oct. 25 through Oct. 31, 2009 "National Hispanic Media Week" in honor of U.S. Latino media. The Huffington Post reports that Reid was unable to get any Republican co-sponsors for the resolution. The resolution notes that there are more than 800 Hispanic newspapers, with a combined circulation of 17,800,000, and more than 550 Hispanic magazines with a circulation of 31,600,000; and that one in eight Americans reads Hispanic publications. Despite the economic crisis, the resolution notes, the Spanish-language press generated $1.4 billion last year.

Writing for America's Voice, columnist Maribel Hastings notes that these reasons were not enough to appeal to Republican senators. "If they don't support issues of interest to the Latino community and the immigrant community," she writes, "why would they applaud the media that inform these communities about how some Republicans rant against them?"

I wonder if the Republicans would have ignored this measure had it been called the "Asian Press" or the "African American Press". What a political debacle that could have created.
A contribution is just that and should be recognized, regardless the contributors origin.
The time has come to stop pushing away a society that has so much to offer.
Brilliant minds graduate every May that could go on, yes, with well earned and deserved scholarships, to higher education that could in turn benefit all of us.
All the energy put into keeping Hispanics down and in the shadows should instead be channeled into helping move forward Immigration Reform to help everyone.

As an American, I wonder where we are going as a community. We continue to be polarized by some politicians and others in our community. Why should we honor the "Hispanic Press"? Does this group of people matter? Maybe those in Washington want to marginalize that portion of the American culture. If we continue to keep them down and not recognize their contributions to this country maybe they will just go away. This group of people is the fastest growing portion of the nation's population and may become one huge geo-political, socio-economic electorate. As an American, I continue to watch how the Hispanic community is received, perceived and addressed by our politicians and other in our community. My parents raised me to watch, look, listen and learn from those around me. Some of the writing and reporting of this portion of the press makes it outside the borders of the U.S. Many of us live here in the states and have lived here all our lives. Many of us see how politicians and talking heads address this group of citizens. I don't call my self anything but American. And my last name is Gonzales
