Editors Note: In 2007 127 homicides occurred in Oakland, 98 occurred in San Francisco and 47 homicides occurred last year in Richmond but there are programs aimed at quelling the violence. Beats, Rhymes and Life is a program that uses HIp Hop as therapy to keep youngsters in the studio and off the streets.
In partnership with EBACY East Bay Asian youth Center and Oakland High School this student led program consists of an after school hip hop therapy sessions where students from several East Bay schools can spit lyrics to work out their problems instead of picking up guns. Their mission is to promote positive youth development and mental wellness, supporting teens in ways they find most meaningful. They recently had an event at La Pena cultural center where they sold CD’s to raise money for the program.

I am very happy to see the positive attention Beats, Rhymes and Life (BRL) has been getting from the press lately. What began as a single therapeutic program is blossoming into a movement. BRL is not only having a tremendous impact on the youth we serve, but we are also influencing the ways helping professions approach their youth counterparts and how they view Hip Hop music and culture. Throughout the country there are scores of organizations using Hip Hop to work with youth in various capacities. BRL along with these programs serve as invaluable tools in engaging under-served youth populations for whom more traditional approaches have proved ineffective.
