Puerto Rican Cop Accused of Bias in Gay Murder Case

GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico -- Gay rights activists are calling for an unbiased investigation into the brutal murder of Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado, a 19-year-old gay man whose body was found burned, decapitated and dismembered in Cayey, Puerto Rico on Friday. Pedro Julio Serrano, spokesperson for the Puerto Rico Para Tod@s Human Rights Foundation, said that the investigating officer of the case, Ángel Rodríguez Colón, made "unthinkable, immoral and unethical" comments concerning the murder. "These types of people who get involved in this and go out know this can happen to them," Rodriguez said in a televised statement on Univision.
"It is unthinkable that the investigating officer is alleging that the victim was asking to be killed. It's like the absurd and fallacious argument that a woman is asking to be raped because she’s wearing a short skirt. We demand that the investigating officer resign from the case and that Superintendent Figueroa Sancha replace him with someone who is qualified to investigate this heinous murder, without any kind of bias,” said Serrano.
Ada Conde, president of the Human Rights Foundation, asked Figueroa Sancha and Secretary of Justice Antonio Sagardía to investigate the case as a hate crime.
