Koreans Join Hispanics in Protests

NEW YORK — Members of the Korean Community in New York joined in marches protesting proposed changes to current immigration policies, the Korea Times reports. Groups like the Korean Women's Association and various Korean church groups marched alongside Latinos during the April 1st event. One Mexican man who works in a Korean-owned business said he “felt a real camaraderie” with the Koreans he marched with. He added that Koreans, like most Latinos, also opposed House Bill HR 4437. Another man, originally from Ecuador, pointed out that a lot of Latinos find work with Korean businesses throughout in the United States. Because of this, he says, both communities need to work together in informing the immigration debate. Yo Hyun Kim, director of the Korean Community Center in New York, feels Koreans need to take a more active role on this issue as they are also Americans. Since the marches began many Koreans say they feel closer to the Latino community.
