Immigrant Detention Center Proposed in Virginia

Virg. -- Virginia is considering creating a detention center exclusively for undocumented immigrants accused of committing crimes in the state, according to El Tiempo Latino. The plan was presented on September 26 by the Virginia Crime Commission. In order to carry out the project, Virginia would have to reach an agreement with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The location of the 1,000-bed center has not been decided.

Conservatives in the states contend that undocumented immigrants are crowding the local jails. Estimates presented to the Crime Commission indicate that undocumented immigrants account for six to ten percent of prisoners in local jails in Virginia. State Senator Kenneth W. Stolle (R-Virginia Beach) claims that ICE does not have sufficient beds for the number of undocumented immigrants who commit crimes and because of this, individuals are being released after they complete their sentences rather than being picked up by immigration authorities. Under the proposed program, these undocumented immigrants would remain in the detention center after completing their sentences until they could be deported by ICE. This would be the first jail of its kind in the country.

Yeah, this actually should be in all states. I recently attended a meeting in Washington D.C., I couldn't believe what I saw. We were in Fairfax, driving down the road in the town, and heres all these spanish men looking for day labor, in broad day light, just standing and waiting on the side of the road. At first I was like oh these guys are probably waiting for rides or something, than my friend said no these guys do this everyday, I couldn't believe it.
